Lightning Strikes – Beautiful, Destructive & Avoidable?
What is Lightning Really?
Essentially lightning is a buildup and release of static electricity caused by various conditions within a cloud formation. Primarily lightning occurs when positively charged ions move up and negatively charged ions move down within a cloud. During a Thunderstorm, once a significant amount of ionized static has built up a discharge occurs and releases the bolt of lightning.
The average lightning bolt is extremely hot, typically reaching over 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit (hotter than the Sun!) and extremely powerful producing nearly 100 million volts and 30,000-50,000 amps per strike. Lightning is also extremely fast as it typically travels over 220,000,000 miles per hour! On average the Earth is typically hit by over 8 million lightning bolts every day or over 100 lightning strikes per second! Each lightning bolt unleashes as much energy as blowing up a ton of TNT. The damage caused by lightning globally is very costly in terms of economic as well as environmental impact!
Lightning and its effects around the World?
Let’s take a look at how costly lightning is on average. In 2016 there were 38 lightning deaths in the United States, compared with 26 in 2015 and 2014. From 2006 to 2016 on average about 31 people died each year from lightning strikes in the United States, according to the National Weather Service. The significant decline in lightning deaths is due to fewer farmers working in fields, along with technological advances, better lightning protection and awareness of lightning safety.
With Florida having the most lightning deaths in 2016 with nine deaths, followed by four in Louisiana and New York, according to statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Mississippi reported three deaths, and Alabama, Colorado, Michigan, North Carolina and Texas had two lightning deaths. Arizona, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin each reported one death.
EMP Shield Offers 100% Home Lightning Defense
From an Economic standpoint alone, Lightning is amazingly destructive, especially for businesses and homeowners around the world. In the U.S., the number of homeowner’s insurance claims from lightning strikes and electrical surges in the United States rose in 2016, compared with 2015; however, the average cost that insurers paid on those claims fell. More than $825 million in lightning claims was paid out in 2016 to more than 100,000 policyholders.
Total insured losses caused by lightning rose 4.5 percent from 2015 to 2016, although overall losses have declined 12.4 percent since 2007. There were 109,049 lightning claims in 2016, up 9.7 percent from 2015. Over fifty percent of claims were related to electrical surge damaging components or wiring, while power surges from transformer or service line shorts were also contributing factors. “The average cost per claim dropped 4.7 percent from 2015 to 2016,” said James Lynch, FCAS MAAA, chief actuary at the I.I.I. “However, the overall average cost per claim has risen 42.3 percent since 2007. By comparison,” he noted, “The Consumer Price Index rose only 15.8 percent in the same period.”
What can you do to protect your home or business from Lightning?
There are many products on the market today that help to mitigate the damage caused to personal property from the devastating effects of Lightning. One such device is the EMP Shield, created by a team of rugged engineers, who originally set out to protect Homes, Businesses, Vehicles as well as State and Federal facilities from the dangers of EMP, HEMP or CME type events! The guys at EMP Shield developed their amazing product and realized that it also protects Homeowners, Communication Towers, Satellite Arrays, Businesses and Facilities from Lightning Strikes as well.
In the old days, we would attach a wrought iron rod to the roof of our home and run a cable to the ground. Today, in this sophisticated and modern world we live in, the EMP Shield has become a trusted and modernized version of the old lightning rod of yesterday!
What is an EMP Shield?
EMP Shield Offers 100% lighting gaurantee and had 4x devices struck last year with no impacts to the homes or facilities electrical systems that were struck.
EMP Shield is also the worlds only tested and approved EMP protection technology for an entire electrical system.
Built to exceed military standards (MIL-STD-188-125-1), EMP Shield is also one of the worlds fastest whole home surge protectors operating in less than 1 billionth of a second.
EMP Shield is designed to protect an entire home from Lightning, CME (coronal mass ejection, power surges, and an EMP (electromagnetic pulse). Proven and tested at Keystone Compliance, a Federally approved Department of Defense (DOD) testing facility, Our EMP Shield was struck with over 40x EMP strikes with no impact to the device.
How Does It Work?
The EMP Shield can see and protect all the electronics and equipment connected to your electrical system.
This is accomplished by shunting (shorting) the over voltage coming in from the Grid and the voltage surges that are collected within your home.
Whether the electrons are collected within your home or are attempting to come into your electrical system from outside the home (the grid), the EMP Shield will see the surge and protect your electrical system. The EMP Shield reacts in less than 1 billionth of a second. Since the shunting is completed incredibly fast, the over voltage is drained away from the equipment before the voltage can rise high enough to damage any equipment. We call this new technology SightSpeed™
